Hi Paul, thanx for all your help in my 6 speed project.
This is one of 3 rides I have, restored from an Oklahoma car about 10 years ago and constantly being upgraded. Motor is 93 Mustang GT and originally had an AOD behind it. Changed to a 4 speed top loader 2 years ago and finally fitted with your ProFit 6-speed Magnum kit.
Have added Vintage retro air, ECI disc front brakes, Flaming River tilt stainless steering column, American mags, etc. Motor was tired when I got it, soooo...Punched it .030 over with a complete rebalance and GT40-s-heads. It still retains the fuel injection and Ron Francis and Telorvek wiring.
I lowered the car at both ends to get the profile I wanted as you can see from the pictures.
The back bumper was out being plated when these were taken.

Gray:
Over the past several months, I have ordered and installed several items from APT, through your representative Paul. Paul was of immense help to me the numerous times I called seeking help and advice. One does not always receive this level of assistance from suppliers, but Paul was always there for me and I appreciate it very much.
I would not hesitate to recommend American Powertrain to anyone seeking excellent products and professional advice. Paul deserves a star for his work.
Thank you!

My experience with the conversion of my transmission from a automatic to a five speed with hydraulic clutch was nothing short of enjoyable. They provided me with all the parts and technical support they said they would, and it works like they said it would. That’s pretty rare these days. Hats off to Gray and his staff at American Powertrain.

Gray,
Thank you so much for you time today (Saturday!!!)
Always an adventure making brand new modern parts mesh with a 37 year old car, so it is essential to be in touch with someone like you during the whole process.
The Tremec TKO is the single best mod I could ever imagine for an older muscle car like my Trans Am. With the 2.87 first gear, my overall 'out of the hole' reduction is 9.81. I would need to run a 3.91 rear with the stock TH400 to duplicate that number. And there is nothing like 80 miles per hour at a leisurely 2200 RPMs on the freeway.
The TKO makes he car an absolute PLEASURE to drive!
Here are pics of the car!

1957 Belair, 468BB, 550hp/550tq, American Powertrain ProFit TKO600 Kit, Front and Rear Disc Brakes, Cool Ride front and Air Ride 4-link rear w/Shockwave Air Shocks, Custom 3.73 posi 12-bolt, 205/65/15's fronts and 315/60/15's rears, Ididit Tilt, Glide Engineering Split Bench, Ron Francis wiring.
I did all the body work myself and blocked and blocked and to get it straight, sprayed it original Indian Ivory over not original Black Cherry about 18 years ago. Still looks pretty good but planning on a redo.
This all started when I was twelve years old after discovering the car in a garage it had been sitting in for at least 16 years. My dad got the car in ‘68 shortly after his tour in Vietnam and it became a real passion for the two of us.

I've assembled many Powertrain combinations in this car including rebuilding the original 283/3-speed manual, 350/th350, 383stroker/700r4, and a 454/th400.
We're also planning factory air and a great sound system.
This time the Powertrain was done right, adding the 468 550tq, 550 hp and the tko600 from the guys at American Powertrain! This one is the most functional and FUN to drive so far!
Best Regard,
Rich Fish

PURCHASED: American Powertrain
ProFit™ TKO500 Kit |
 |
After a few years of changes, my '80 Corvette was running about 450 horses with a 4 speed. Fun to drive, but running 3500 RPM at 70 and getting slightly over 11 MPG at that speed.
Then came the TKO 500 ProFit Kit from American Powertrain. There was absolutely no down side. The 1st through 4th gear ratios allow for a better run through the RPM range, it shifts smoother that any Muncie, and running 2300 RPM at 80 MPH is the reason cars last longer these days.
One of the biggest surprises to me was the increase in fuel mileage. Soon after break in, I took a 1400 mile round trip to visit friends and family. During the trip, I did a 3 hour run on the interstate at 78 MPH just because I was curious. The result - 17.23 MPG. That may not be remarkable by today’s standards, but for a 30 year old hot rod, it was pretty impressive to me.
Anyway, if you're thinking about it - pull the trigger. You'll
never look back.

I want to thank Gray et al at American Powertrain for the great guidance and support in my successful installation of a TKO 600 into my Classic Roadsters Sebring component car. Everything worked out perfectly including the clutch, bell housing, hydraulic release bearing, and speedo adapter & cable. Gray even calculated and selected the correct gear for my VDO speedo head. Everyone I spoke with from support to shipping was helpful and courteous. While it is often the norm to order components online yourself for conversion jobs like this, I have learned that there is untold value and wisdom in relying on the advice, experience, and support from American Powertrain.

I would like to take the time to thank you for all of you assistance
and expertise with my purchase and installation of my new Tremec 5
speed. Your confidence in this product was only exceeded by the
outstanding performance of this application. |
 |
Paul, you made this whole process seamless and you carried out every
facet of this sale from unit delivery to technical support - a thing
of organizational beauty and smoothness.
I would wholeheartedly advise any muscle car enthusiast to truly
consider the Tremec Transmission because of it's increased economy,
strength, durability, and cruiseability over all other applications.
I found that having 21st century engine, suspension, and
differential upgrades and using a 46 year old Muncie made no
performance sense. After installing the Tremec, I questioned myself
of why I waited so long because nothing compares with the way that
this car operates and performs now, from idle to stomp down and go.
I understand some enthusiasts need for originality but if you can
heighten the fun and enjoyability that you will have with a Tremec
Trans, it is something that should be really considered. If that
consideration turns into a real plan to purchase one of this special
units, please use American Powertrain for your company of choice
because the reps (especially Paul Unterstein) will stand beside you
all the way through the process while the company will stand behind
the whole experience.
Thanks again.

Power Tour was a great time. The car was very well received by
spectators and Hot Rod Magazine and Hot Rod TV. DF photographed it

people ask I would be more then happy to hand them out. As soon
as I get Bruce to finish up the window knobs we will start back

An email from J. Garfield, North Carolina
Mr. Hall,
The 5-speed is magnificent!!! My car behaves as if it had been
waiting for it.--Quicker off the mark, cooler running engine, lower rpms, handles like a much smaller and lighter roadster. You've
installed the speed-shift spring for 3rd and 4th gears.--I like it.
The last time I wrote to you, I told you of the 24.1 mpg I
experienced
driving from Gary's shop to my home in Asheville.--It has gotten
better with my highest recorded mpg being 28.2 (The overall average
for that 260-mile trip from Asheville to Fort Bragg was 27.8 mpg.)
The trip from Fort Bragg to Asheville is along gentle uphill roads
with the steepest hill being Old Fort Mountain.--On good (i.e.,
ideal) days with the GM Turbo 3-speed Automatic, my mpg would be in
the 18.5 to 19.3 range using 13.0 gallons. On my 16 February trip
to Asheville with the TKO500, I used 9.9 gallons. I habitually
travel at the established speed limits.
Most sincerely,
Jeff Garfield.
Happy Life with 5-speed

Hey Gray,
Here is a picture of my 68 Camaro. It is a 396/375 SS. I drive it even more now that I have that 5th gear working for me. (:-) I love the Tremec TKO 5-speed I got from American Powertrain. It has performed great.
I must tell you, though, what I was really looking for was someone I could count on if needed. Since I was putting the five speed in myself, that was an important factor in my decision. I have to say, I was not disappointed with the commitment you made at the time of sale. Every time I called, I always got an answer. A couple of those times were on the weekend and in the evenings.
You have not disappointed my expectations at all. If anything you have exceeded them.
Thanks again for a great product, and even more, someone there if needed!

TKO600 Transmission
Conversion Kit for 1973 Challenger
November 20, 2007
Dear Gray,
First let me thank
you for caring about the product you're selling me and explaining which
transmission would be best suited for my application.
I
will say at first, spending this kind of money on a transmission is a huge
expenditure for me. But because of your knowledge and customer service
this is why I went for what seems to be the perfect fit for the Challenger.
I'm awaiting my parts and transmission. It will be a few months before I
can recover monetarily and have the kit installed into the car but believe
me I can hardly wait. I will keep you updated on the progress of the
car, as soon as it is installed for a final progress report.
What made me purchase the kit from you is the customer service that you gave
me and without that I would have probably gone somewhere else. You
were also able to shave quite a bit of the price which also was a
determining factor. If all goes well, I will tell everyone I know to
call you for the kit. May you and your Family have a
happy and safe Holiday season.

XJS 5-speed
An email from Jeff
Gentlemen:
THANK YOU.
I truly appreciate the reception, conversations,
getting me to the hotel, and all the great,
hard work in
installing the 5-speed.
Guys, the trip to Asheville was great.--'Like
driving a new sports car! Once I entered Highway 40, I remained in 5th
until exiting on Asheville's Highway 240 Loop. Of course the RPMs were
down compared to the automatic's top gear and the temperature guage rested above
"C" but well below "N", so the engine was running cooler. The car felt
more maneuverable. I really enjoyed the
115-mile drive.
Most respectfully,
Jeff.
Your loyal
customer. |
