“Well I went for a couple of drives, everything
seems excellent, the clutch is really good, no
chattering at all, very easy to drive. The trans
shifts very nice for being brand new, I am already
loving the ,64 overdrive… Day two was excellent, I have
almost 200 miles on it already.....can't wait to try it
at the track!!” |

A few quick things to consider: |
|
Rating Standards |
► |
Clutches are rated with torque
limitations rather than
horsepower. If you do not
know how much torque you have
make your choice based on rear
wheel horsepower as a loose
equivalency. All torque
ratings on these clutches are
figured with a 15% safety margin
for those who wish to push their
luck. |
|
The Right Clutch for
the Job |
► |
Choose a clutch with no more
than 20% greater torque rating
than your engine produces.
Too much clutch can be just as
bad as too little. |
|
Choosing a Pressure Plate |
► |
Because of advanced friction
materials it is possible to
handle loads of power with a
very comfortable pressure plate.
Try to stay with a standard
clamp load plate if possible
unless you are in love with
higher pedal effort. |
|
Choosing and Buying a
ScienceFriction™ Clutch
is as Easy as 1-2-3! |
|
1. Find your application: |
► |
We have clutches
for almost every domestic V8 powered vehicle built since 1955!
Remember, clutches are engine, flywheel and transmission input-spline specific and are not
specific to car model. Typically, small block applications call for
10.5” clutches, while most big blocks are 11”. This is not a hard
and fast rule and varies by year and engine.
If you can’t find your application or don’t know what you need, call
and let us help. |
|
2. Choose your pressure plate: |
► |
Based on size, clamp load and ease of
actuation. All standard clamp load ScienceFriction™
pressure plates feel
amazingly close to a stock modern clutch. Think new Mustang,
Corvette or Challenger. High torque pressure plates add a little
more leg effort and increase torque ratings. Generally speaking, it
is best to choose a Standard Clamp Load pressure plate, with a disc
that suits your power needs. Step up to high clamp load if you can’t
get to your power rating with a standard plate. ProTwin™
pressure plates are very light on the leg and afford the
most extreme performance with the least pedal effort.
|
|
3. Choose your clutch
material: |
► |
Based on the descriptions below and
your power needs. All of these discs are fully streetable,
though some are more forgiving than others. Our staff will be happy
to discuss these options if you would prefer to call. |
| Clutch Materials: |
| ► |
ProGrip Organix™
Discs
are a step above a stock disc, using greater
grip and a fully sprung hub to return energy gradually to the system
and a Marcel cushion spring, making them a smooth choice for street,
strip and circle track applications. Use
Organix™
from stock to about
500ft-lb applications. |
| ► |
ScienceFriction™
Full Circle
Kevlar discs are very smooth, with tons of grip
and great heat dissipation. They also last about 3-5 times longer
than stock organic discs and won’t chatter like some of their dual
friction cousins. Great for stock to 650ft-lb street or strip
applications where superior durability is a concern. ScienceFriction™
Full
Circle Kevlar discs are fully cushions and feature a shock reduction
sprung hub. |
| ► |
ProGrip Organix™
/Ceramix™
Dual Friction discs
are smooth and compare
favorably to Centerforce dual friction material at a lower cost.
This is a slightly less streetable option compared to the Full
Circle Kevlar, and offers low chatter characteristics with lots of
grip and both a sprung rebound hub and a flexible Marcel cushion.
Great for 450 to 650ft-lb applications, a smooth way to take
advantage of the fantastic characteristics of Ceramix™
without the
harsh uptake of a no-cushion hub. |
| ► |
ProGrip Ceramix™
Extreme discs
are The Big Kahuna of single disc
clutch applications; Ceramix™ discs have almost twice the grip of
organic material. While a sprung hub gives them excellent rebound
control, they can chatter some when cold. A very affordable
alternative to big dollar twin disc clutches, ProGrip
Ceramix™ is the
best high power bang for your buck. Excellent for 500 to 850ft-lb
applications. |
|
Disc Terms: |
| Full Circle |
► |
Friction material covers the
entire face of the clutch.
This provides smoother
engagement and eliminates
chatter. |
| Button/Puck Style |
► |
Small sections of friction
material is bonded or riveted to
the clutch substrate.
Generally associated with very
high friction materials. |
| Marcel/Cushion |
► |
A flat spring sandwiched between
the layers of friction material
to provide smooth engagement. |
| Rebound/Sprung Hub |
► |
Provides shock reduction to
protect transmission components.
A sprung hub is loaded with
energy on engagement and
gradually returns it to the
system. All single disc
ScienceFriction™ clutches feature a
sprung hub. |
| Captured Spring |
► |
While many clutches use a small
split in the hub material to
house the rebound springs, most
ScienceFriction™ clutches use a stamped
plate to fully capture the
springs and hold them in place.
This is a safer style of hub and
allows the springs to load in a
linear fashion without becoming
inch-worm shaped. This is
the most efficient way to store
and return shock load to the
system. |
| Dual Sprung Hub |
► |
ScienceFriction™ discs feature dual
springs in the clutch hubs to
soak up more energy without
using oversized diameter
springs. This allows
better clearance to the flywheel
bolts for the life of the
clutch. |
| Solid Hub |
► |
Some clutches do not use a
cushion due to the inflexible
nature of the material.
Ceramix™ discs do not have a
cushion, however they still
feature a rebound hub to smooth
engagement and protect your
transmission. ProTwin™
discs have no springs in their
solid hubs and use progressive
uptake to soak up shock load
instead. |
|
|
Whatever your clutch and flywheel needs, choose
ScienceFriction™ to cruise or to hook and cook!
| The ScienceFriction™ Difference |
| All clutches are not created equal! Every ScienceFriction™ component is built to our specifications based on years of powertrain experience. These are the clutches we would put in our own cars. Whenever possible, our clutch components are made in the USA. |
| Kit Contents |
| Every ScienceFriction™ kit includes the proper pilot tool, a high quality pilot bearing and, when applicable, a new US Made release (throw-out) bearing.
|
| Price |
| Beware of the HYPE! Only a few companies actually manufacture clutches. Often you are paying lots of extra money for the a color or for fancy names and gimmicky pressure plates.
ScienceFriction™ clutches are a straightforward way to choose a great clutch for a reasonable price without all the hype. |
